If you have ever been told that you have a great voice, then you may have thought of making use of that great voice in a professional way, as a singer, announcer or as a voice over talent. Voice over, or adding your voice to advertisements and recorded messages, can be a very lucrative field for a trained talent. If you would like to get the training necessary to succeed as a voice over talent then here are a few steps to take.
But first before I give the step-by-step guide to a career in voice over, remember one thing: in the commercial world all kinds of voices are needed: low voices, whiny voices, gravelly voices, flat voices and even average voices. So, even if you don’t have a classic “good voice” you can enter the field if you have determination. Here is what you should do.
1. Take Acting Classes:
Yes, take acting classes if you are in a major city. Find a course and enroll in it. Why acting classes? You need to know how to create the characters who “speak” in a commercial. Just taking an animation class won’t do it. You need to start the process organically. It’s not about the voice, yet, it’s about the intent beneath the voice that shapes the voice.
2. Take a Voice Over Class
After you’ve opened yourself up for three months in an acting class, time to move into specifics with a voice over class. In L.A., the best resource is http://www.voiceoverresourceguide.com. It lists all the studios as well as all the classes in L.A. At the top are http://www.voicecaster.com and http://www.bigdogvoiceover.com.
3. Start Practicing at Home
In addition to class, listen to any and every commercial on the TV and radio. Mimic them. Pick up magazines and read aloud the ad copy as though it were a commercial. Get so used to your voice that silence sounds wrong.
4. Find Your Niche
Once you’ve gotten a handle on your instrument – your voice – you need to know what your range is and, by association, what your market is. Are you the classy BMW voice, the GenX hamburger guy, the Don Pardo game show host? You could be all three and more. Knowing all that you can do will help you with confidence and direction when promoting yourself.
So, start studying, keep practicing and try to determine where your voice would fit in best.

How long have you been a Voice Actor?
I’d say circa 1997. My first paid VO gig was for a small role in a video game called Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete.
How did you get into the business?
A friend introduced me to the video game directer and I landed that first role. Then I got into radio and did that on and off for about 17 years. I started to take voice over seriously and focusing on my chops in 2009. And a fun fact: the friend that introduced me to the video game directer was Ashley Parker Angel that later became a member of O-Town on the reality TV show “Making the Band”.
What are some of your favorite projects?
The answer changes every day but my favorite projects typically fall into 2 categories: the ones I see on TV all the time, or the ones with really fun and creative people on the sessions.
Do you have a Voice Coach and why?
I absolutely have voice coaches (plural). If the best athletes in the world have multiple coaches, so can I as a voice actor. It’s the best way I know of to push myself to grow and be better, but also to stay current with trends in voice over in general.
What kind of equipment do you have in your studio?
I’m on a Sennheiser 416 about 90% of the time. I also have a Neumann 103. I use an Avalon AD 2022 preamp, an Allen and Heath mixer and Pro Tools.
How do you feel about sound quality?
Sound quality can be the difference between booking a gig and not booking it. That being said though, I’ve been know to obsess over it and hear every tiny imperfection. Obsession is bad. Being conscientious is good. I try to give myself every advantage I can with equipment and editing to make sure my files are clean, crisp and full.
What else should we know about Chad?
I am in the final stages of restoring a 1970 Chevy Monte Carlo that I bought at age 18 and drove through high school and college. I’m a fan of solar panels and electric cars (I drive a Volt, too). I love playing pinball, and I’m a HUGE Laker fan, even when they play awful.

How long have you been a Voice Actor?
It was my grade 3 teacher who first sat me in front of a microphone to record books on tape for the younger children. A life long career in broadcasting, production and full time voice over ensued!
How did you get into the business?
My first on air job was a small market radio station, spinning country music at night while going to high school during the day. As technology evolved, I tried to keep up.
What are some of your favorite projects?
I enjoy the story telling that comes with narrating TV shows. My voice on See No Evil on Investigation Discovery is one of their top rated shows two years running.
